AQIQAH & NAZAR
AQIQAH
Aqiqah is a Sunnah practice in Islam, performed as a form of gratitude to Allah for the birth of a child. It involves the sacrifice of livestock — typically one goat/sheep for a girl, and two for a boy. The meat is then distributed to family, friends, and those in need.
It is usually performed on the 7th day after birth, but can still be done later if not fulfilled earlier. Aqiqah also includes the shaving of the baby’s hair and giving it in charity based on its weight in silver.
NAZAR
Nazar is a vow or solemn promise made by a Muslim to perform a specific act of worship or charity if a particular wish or prayer is fulfilled. It is a voluntary act, but once a vow is made and the condition is met, it becomes wajib (obligatory) to fulfill it.
For example, someone may say: “If I pass my exam, I will sacrifice a goat for the sake of Allah.” Once the exam is passed, the person is religiously bound to fulfill that vow.
Nazar should be made sincerely, and only for acts that are permissible in Islam.
